Dear Contempo friends,

At the launch of the Contempo blog, I wish to share with you once again the reason for doing Contempo.

There are biblical passages that I need to go back to regularly. John 1 is one of them. We find questions such as “Who are you?” (v.21), “Why do you serve God the way you do?” (v.25) and “Where do you stay?” (v.38). Every Christian should ask these same questions. The answer Jesus gave to his disciples was straightforward, “Come and see.” (v.39)

There are concepts that I need to fall back to daily. One of them is to “abide in the Lord” (John 15:4) as the branches have to be constantly connected to the vine. Otherwise I would bear no fruit, and live and work in vain. The importance of this concept was hinted by the earlier question: “Where do you stay?” (John 1:38). The same verb was used by the disciples.

In applying this truth to our work life, there are at least three implications:

  • We should live the transformed life of grace wherever we may be.
  • Whatever we do we should do as unto the Lord and our work will become a sacrifice to God.
  • The only way we can make it is through the power of the Holy Spirit.

This is what Contempo is about: the application of biblical faith to our work life.

The Contempo blog, then, is a platform for us Christian career people, sharing our ups and downs, cheers and tears, success and difficulties as we travel this journey together.

In many of the case studies, there will not be a “model” answer. My prayer is that through discussing real life situations, we will be challenged to dig deeper into the Bible and reexamine our positions.

One more note. I have found out that there is no such thing as seniority in this pursuit. Just as I thought I have made some headway in one area, I am immediately reminded of other blind spots. No matter how long we have been working in our career or how long we have been Christians, we still need to “abide in the Lord” just as much.

Last but not least, I wish to thank all the co-workers who have volunteered their time and efforts to make this dream come true. It is exciting to see the national network take shape.

May the words in this blog and the thoughts in our hearts be acceptable in God’s sight!
